Culture Road is a collective of audio, video, visual arts, and literary criticisms of culture and ecology. By culture, we mean fine art, music, dance, theatre, and television. And by ecology, we mean human relations to their communities and social environments, including hospitality. In our research activities, we seek to find out what brings about ambiance, and whether culture holds the key to understanding the exclusionary concept of “social death” as articulated by Achille Mbembe, the Cameroon-born philosopher at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Our goal is to find a balance in life at times of strife.
We analyze contemporary issues from cultural and historical perspectives. Besides this website, we publish a newsletter, produce a podcast and a video blog. Production, editing, and hosting are overseen by George Joshua Orwel, an art philosopher and a professor in New York City, who is also executive director of Culture Road. He is assisted by many artists and professionals, including Angela Mosley, a musician and philosopher who is engaged in youth development in Chicago, as well as Aurelia Adhiambo, a peace policy analyst and graduate student at the University of Nairobi’s African Women’s Studies Center.
